Once every few months I receive a call or an email that goes something like this: “My Mom was a lifelong crafter and has died and we are cleaning out her crafting stuff. We don’t know what to do with it and wondered if you might like it?”. I hate the...
“Can I sew a straight line?” – if I had a pound for every time I was asked that question that almost all beginner sewers want to know. And when we teach workshops, we love to share tips that we use because we know other people like a bit of help...
I’m not sure if you will have seen the rumors about the Great British Sewing Bee on social media over the last week, but it looks like it may be no more. The reason for the potential cancellation hasn’t been very clear or forthcoming, but after four...
I am about to take some much-needed R and R to give the creative juices a chance to regenerate (as a matter of fact, next month at this time I will be in Vermont, sitting on my parents porch with a very cold beer!). This blog post is a bit different than the normal...
When I first started to make my own binding many years ago, it was more out of necessity than anything else. The binding that I could buy was, to put it simply, awful. It was always in wide range of three colours and was the texture of starched linen. When you took it...

Our Overlockers for Beginners workshop can make all the difference to your finished sewing – no more raggy hems and your finish looks like it was made by a high street shop. Plus you really understand what it can do and most importantly – how to thread it!!
But what if you have never sewn on one before and are not sure if it will make that much difference for the sewing that you do and the additional cost of purchasing one? Or what if you have one but do not know how to use it properly or keep finding that the same old problems when sewing keep you from using it to its full potential? Or what if people keep telling you that you need one and you have no clue what it is!
Our Beginners Guide to Overlockers is for those that do not own an overlocker but want to have a go on one or have one but need guidance on how to get the most out of it and how to overcome the main problems that occur when using one.
You will receive approximately two hours demonstration in the Studios relaxed environment, including a question and answer section, on how to use our four spool serger, a Toyota SL1A or any overlockers brought by attendees. This is a chance to see what an overlocker does and also answer questions on what using it requires. The demonstration will include:
what each of the four spools of the thread do in overlock stitch construction
how to thread up a machine from scratch with tips and tricks to make it painless
how to rethread a machine without having to thread from the beginning
maintenance and how to keep your machine running properly
a set of sample stitches
a three-page troubleshooters guide
We also discuss what overlockers we would recommend for purchasing if you are considering buying one.
Skill Level: Absolute Beginner
Course Availability: Daytime, evening
Fee and what this includes: 20.00, coffee/tea and a homemade snack.
