I have been busy sewing away the last few weeks on my newly refurbished Bernina 802 Sport. I am not quite sure why Bernina decided to add the word “sport” to the name as it doesn’t really do anything that would make Jeremy Clarkson want to take it...
Quite a few years ago, I somehow came across this wonderful sewing resource that was written by an elderly lady who was entering her twilight years and wanted to write about her experience of what was a good sewing kit based on her many years of sewing and also the...
If there is one thing I have learned whilst doing my workshops here at the Studio, crafting isn't just about learning a new skill, it is about connecting with people and making time to be social. And what better time to do this than during the Winter monthes when...
I have been so busy that I suddenly noticed…it is winter! “The Invincible Summer,” a quote print by Matthew Kavan Brooks for Society6 You could forgive me for not noticing it as much as the weather has been so mild that one would, at times, confuse...
About two years ago, I received a phone call from a man who was contacting the Studio on behalf of his wife. They lived in the local community and had heard about what we do through an article in one of the newspapers. His wife was no longer able to sew due to...
I love, love, love sewing machines – old, new, reconditioned, etc. We have our Lending Stitches programme, where we happily (and most importantly – freely!) loan out sewing machines – these have been given to me by the general public and are a bit...
I'm Maeri... Whether it is a growing list of crafty workshops, a tool to help you to make beautiful things or the ramblings of a now creative lady, our website includes all of them in different measures!

Our Overlockers for Beginners workshop can make all the difference to your finished sewing – no more raggy hems and your finish looks like it was made by a high street shop. Plus you really understand what it can do and most importantly – how to thread it!!
But what if you have never sewn on one before and are not sure if it will make that much difference for the sewing that you do and the additional cost of purchasing one? Or what if you have one but do not know how to use it properly or keep finding that the same old problems when sewing keep you from using it to its full potential? Or what if people keep telling you that you need one and you have no clue what it is!
Our Beginners Guide to Overlockers is for those that do not own an overlocker but want to have a go on one or have one but need guidance on how to get the most out of it and how to overcome the main problems that occur when using one.
You will receive approximately two hours demonstration in the Studios relaxed environment, including a question and answer section, on how to use our four spool serger, a Toyota SL1A or any overlockers brought by attendees. This is a chance to see what an overlocker does and also answer questions on what using it requires. The demonstration will include:
what each of the four spools of the thread do in overlock stitch construction
how to thread up a machine from scratch with tips and tricks to make it painless
how to rethread a machine without having to thread from the beginning
maintenance and how to keep your machine running properly
a set of sample stitches
a three-page troubleshooters guide
We also discuss what overlockers we would recommend for purchasing if you are considering buying one.
Skill Level: Absolute Beginner
Course Availability: Daytime, evening
Fee and what this includes: 20.00, coffee/tea and a homemade snack.
